What is … the fundamental group and covering spaces?

This page hosts information on Fabian Lenhardt's talk "What is … the fundamental group and covering spaces?" at the "What is …?" seminar. The talk will take place on Tuesday, February 21, 10am at the BMS Loft at Urania. This talk will help you better understand the talk by Holger Reich, which will start at 11am.

This talk is part of the BMS Days 2012. Everybody is welcome to attend the talks at the BMS Days including the talk by Ulrich Reif.

Abstract

We define the fundamental group of a topological space, which is one of the most fundamental topological invariants. One of the main tools for computing fundamental groups is the theory of covering spaces; we give a fast introduction and try to compute some fundamental groups in the end.
