Syzygies of toric varieties
Dienstag, 18.4.06 (14-16 Uhr, Arnimallee 3, SR 210)
It is a fundamental problem in algebraic geometry to understand
the equations and syzygies of a variety in projective
space. We say that a very ample line bundle satisfies $N_p$ (for $p > 1$) if the induced embedding is projectively normal, the equations
defining the image of the embedding in projective space are
quadratic and the first $(p-1)$ syzygy modules are generated
by linear syzygies. I will give an introduction to property $N_p$
and present necessary criteria for line bundles on toric varieties to satisfy $N_p$.

Fano-Dreifaltigkeiten vom Pseudoindex > 1
Dienstag, 02.05.06 (14-16 Uhr, Arnimallee 3, SR 210)
Sei X eine Fano-Dreifaltigkeit mit hoechstens kanonischen
Singularitaeten. Assoziiert zu X findet man eine partielle
krepante Aufloesung Y -> X, eine quasi--Fano--Dreifaltigkeit mit
hoechstens terminalen Singularitaeten.
angeben.

Unprojection constructions in commutative algebra and almost-toric geometry
Dienstag, 23.05.06 (14-16 Uhr, Arnimallee 3, SR 210)
Elimination of a variable is a standard construction of geometry and algebra.
Unprojection is the inverse operation applied in very specific situations.
I will review simple unprojection constructions and then describe joint work
with Miles Reid to construct and classify 'key varieties' for the canonical covers
of Mori flips. These varieties are almost-toric, being 6-dimensional with the action
of a 4-dimensional algebraic torus. This has close relations with the recent work of
Altmann, Hausen and others, although the details in this case are not yet understood.
Our methods include beautiful combinatorial constructions involving toric geometry,
continued fraction expansions and 'cascades of Pfaffians'.

Deformations of a degenerate abelian surface in P^6.
Dienstag, 20.06.06 (14-16 Uhr, Arnimallee 3, SR 210)
Abstract:
A report on work in progress. I will apply results of Klaus Altmann and myself on deformations of Stanley Reisner schemes to the minimal
triangulation of the torus. The resulting 9-dimensional versal deformation space has a surprisingly rich geometry and a mysterious connection to the
Batyrev-Borisov study of Calibi Yau complete intersections in toric varieties.

Im Jahre 1986 veröffentlichte A. Strominger die Arbeit Superstrings with
Gleichungen nutzt.
