What is … a lattice in a Lie group good for?

This page hosts information on Barbara Jung's talk "What is … a lattice in a Lie group good for?" at the "What is …?" seminar. The talk will take place on Friday, December 2, 1pm at the BMS Loft at Urania. This talk will help you better understand the talk by Igor Rivin, which will start at 2pm.

We will again be ordering delivery pizza. If you would like to order pizza with us, please arrive to the "What is …?" seminar by 12:45pm.

Abstract

The talk of Igor Rivin will have discrete subgroups of matrix groups as a topic. But why? In the seminar I will give two examples of such lattices. I will connect them with elliptic curves and with each other, so at the end we see how to understand elliptic curves without algebraic geometry.
