What is … a Gröbner basis?
This page hosts information on
René Birkner's talk "What is … a
Gröbner basis?" at the
"What is …?" seminar. The talk will take place on Friday, October 16, 4pm at FU Arnimallee 6, SR 031.
Abstract
For ideals
of some algebra
a set of generators is in general not unique. When considering the technique of term orders and initial ideals one can compute a subset of the ideal, the so-called Gröbner Basis, with respect to this term order. A reduced form of this Gröbner Basis is in fact unique for a given term order and a generates the ideal. These Gröbner Bases have proven to be useful for many applications from solving polynomial equations to moduli spaces.
