What is … a Killing vector field?

This page hosts information on Mimi Tsuruga's talk "What is … a Killing vector field?" at the "What is …?" seminar. The talk will take place on Friday, April 30, 5pm at the BMS Lounge in TU, MA 212. This talk will be followed by a movie with pizza and drinks.

Abstract

A Killing vector field is a vector field on a Riemannian manifold that preserves the metric. We will go through some basic concepts in differential geometry including Riemannian metric, isometries, and Lie derivatives, and note some nice properties of Killing fields.
